Healthy Woman: Female Conditions - Cystitis is an inflammation of the bladder which affects both women and men, causing discomfort and inconvenience. Symptoms include the following:

• A burning sensation when urinating
• Frequent need to urinate with little urine passed
• A sensation of not being able to hold urine
• Urine with a strong, foul odour and sometimes a dark brown/orange or red colour
• Lethargy or incontinence in older people
• Fever, chills and abdominal pain may also be present in severe cases

Natural therapies for cystitis can be used preventatively and also to relieve the uncomfortable symptoms of cystitis. Cranberry juice may reduce the incidence of bacteria in the urine, which is present in cystitis. Uva ursi is a herb which has traditionally been indicated to help provide relief from urinary infection. Herbal teas containing buchu, marshmallow or cornsilk assist in the relief from the burning pain of cystitis and add essential fluids for flushing of the urinary tract.
